40m/60m link dipole

Following WRC-15 a proposal to allocate a small segment of the 60m band to the radio amateur service has been approved:  5351.5 - 5366.5 kHz would become available on a secondary basis, 15W EIRP.

On December 5th, 2015 the Belgian regulator BIPT pro-actively put forward a consultation on making the WRC-15 proposed 15kHz segment of the 60m band available to radio amateurs.  The consultation period runs until January 4th, 2016.

I am keen to use this new band on my SOTA activities in Belgium (as holder of a full amateur radio licence / Class A) and where permitted abroad under CEPT Recommendation T/R 61-01 (HAREC).

To facilitate this I decided to adapt an old 40m wire dipole and "extend" it into a 40m/60m link dipole.  The dipole is a centre-fed [40m] wire dipole using surplus field telephone wire with extension sections using 4mm Hirschmann plugs.

Dimensions for 40m are 9.65m each leg, the 60m extensions are 3.10m each leg, measured tip-to-tip.

Top: 60m dipole with 1:1 balun (Antenna No 49), LL: 40m dipole, LR: 40m/60m link dipole.

PE insulator for stress relieve, 4mm banana plug and contra-plug.

Wide band scan showing resonance/SWR for the 40m band.

Close-up of the 60m resonance/SWR shows it is OK.

The antenna uses 6mm cable shoes to attach to a centre coax RFC which I use for all my SOTA wire dipoles.
