10 element Yagi for 23cm


I recently bought a small 2m/23cm transverter to try out 23cm from SOTA hill tops.  Having tested the transverter on the test bench signals from my signal generator were received on 2m and the 2m transmit frequency corresponded to 1296MHz.  The power output is only 1W but given SOTA there should be a QTH height advantage so I am hoping that 1W will be enough for now. 


The only thing that remained was an antenna for portable use.  It had to be leight, pre-assembled and should strap to my rucksack for easy transport, so my choice was for a 10 element Yagi.  This would give me some gain yet the antenna pattern would not be too narrow to point the antenna manually.


My antenna is based on an acticle that appeared in DUBUS magazine 2/1994 about "DL6WU Yagis for 23cm".  The article describes several long Yagis and includes drawings and construction details about the folded dipole and impedance transformer. 


As I found out building a Yagi for 23cm requires precision tools.  Element lenghts must be to within 0.1mm (which I managed), boom positions to within 0.1mm (I could only interpolate to 0.5mm) and precision drilling through-the-boom wich is quite difficult using hand equipment.


My prototype 23cm Yagi turned out OK I think.  One can always improve but for now it is a working prototype and I am eager to make my first SOTA 2-way contact on 23cm.

The prototype dipole is slightly 'long' but still OK to use on 1296MHz.



Below is my very first test of the equipment for 23cm:  Yaesu FT857 as back-end 2m multi-mode transceiver, 2m/23cm transverter and a short teflon coax cable to connect to the 10 element Yagi.

The 23cm transverter, lots of interconnecting cables, a handheld for feedback on 70cm FM.



Thus far I managed 1 cross-band contact with a station about 15km away, so I know my 1W station is being heard on 23cm.  I am looking forward to my first SOTA 2-way QSO on 23cm.
