EI/IW-035 Menawn (Minaun) [An Mionnán]

Locator (Maidenhead)

I activated this hilltop as EI/ON4TA/P.

The Mary statue at the top of Menawn Hill.

Very windy and cold on the day, with just 1 QSO from the handheld ...

Menawn hill and cliffs viewed from the roadside at Keel, a few miles distant.

OSI map 30.

On the R319 leaving Achill Sound, after a few kilometers take a local road to the west leading to the area called Mweelin and Dooega.  Almost below the tongue (point 238) of Menawn take a narrow service road leading to the transmitter masts where there is ample parking space.

WX on the day was low cloud with the top of Menawn (466m, SOTA point) disappearing into and re-appearing from the cloud layer.

On foot continue for about 1 kilometer to the southwest over a wide grassy, often stoney track to the highest point of Menawn where you will find the Mary statue and beyond point that a couple of small cairns.

There is plenty of space to erect an HF wire antenna, however, on the day high winds precluded that kind of activity so I took the handheld.  A single QSO was enough to activate my SOTA but not enough to claim the points.

The ascent took about 15 minutes.
