Region

Locator (Maidenhead)

I activated this hilltop as EI/ON4TA/P.

Activating on 2m FM ...

Switching to 40m SSB to get to the required number of QSO's.

OSI map 42.

On the R195 south of Oldcastle take a local road at Millbrook and look for the signs "Loughcrew Megalithic Tomb".  There is parking provided near Slieve na Calliagh, also the SOTA point.

On foot go up the steps and take the path over the contour to the Megalithic site.  I set up the station on a corner at the far end of the enclosure, a little removed from the public entrance.

Loughcrew is worth visiting for its historic significance as well as enjoying a beautiful panorama over Co. Meath and surrounding counties from the hills making up this complex.

The site is not near a major population area so VHF contacts will be few and far between even with an external antenna.  In fact I got none on my first visit.  This time around I was delighted to make a VHF summit-to-summit contact with EI7GY Joe who was on Tonelagee EI/IE-003 in the Wicklow Mountains.

The ascent took about 15 minutes.
